The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) officially hands over the School Feeding Programme to the Government of the Republic of Armenia. The ceremony will take place in Yerevan at the Best Western Congress Hotel on July 3 at 11:00.
The next day, July 4, it is planned to visit the Geghashen school in Kotayk marz. Guests will get acquainted with WFP investment projects: school intensive berry orchards, solar stations, rainwater use, biohumus production, as well as a potential business model that will transform the school into a driver for the development of the entire community.
The ceremony will be attended by Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin, Acting Resident Coordinator of the UN Office in Armenia Niels Scott and President of the Russian Social and Industrial Foodservice Institute Vladimir Chernigov, as well as Deputy Ministers of the Republic Armenia and other high-ranking representatives of international and state structures.
The event will be hosted by WFP Country Director in Armenia Nanna Skau.
About the programme
After more than 13 years of implementing the WFP program, school meals in 10 marzes of the Republic of Armenia are being completely nationalized. This is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the School Feeding and Child Welfare Agency (SFCWA), the Russian Social and Industrial Foodservice Institute (SIFI), the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and its technical partners.
Over the years, the School Feeding project has evolved from a pilot social protection program in Armenia to a massive human capital development platform, helping to improve the quality of education and healthy lifestyles for children through sustainable agriculture, combating climate change, the circular economy and developing local communities.
Since 2016, the implementation of the School Feeding Programme marz by marz has been gradually taken over by the Armenian government, but WFP continues to provide technical support and resources to the program to improve the skills and capacity of its participants.
