On March 10, SIFI together with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Armenia and the School Feeding and Child Welfare Agency held an event to celebrate School Meals Day at Abovyan school No 8, Kotayk province. The celebration brought together all school children of primary grades and their parents.
The event aimed to highlight the activities of WFP’s School Feeding Programme in Armenia. During the interactive performance various flash mobs and games were organized for children and their parents to get acquainted with the harmful effects of an unhealthy diet and the importance of balanced, nutritious meals. At the end of the celebration, all the guests danced to the anthem of a healthy lifestyle - a song written specifically for the School Feeding Programme.
To continue the celebration of the International School Meals Day in Armenia, WFP and partners invite all parents with their primary grades school children to participate in an online quest that will be followed by special prizes for the winners.
2022 marks the 10th anniversary of International School Meals Day. On this day, school children, school staff, and different stakeholders involved in school meal programmes around the globe participate in dedicated events and share their success stories to promote healthy school meals.
Abovyan No 8 school is among other 89 schools in Kotayk province that will be handed over to the government by 2022. Eight provinces have been already gradually nationalized to ensure the sustainability of this life-changing programme in the country. As a result of a successful nationalization of the School Meals Programme, the Government of Armenia has recently signed the declaration of commitment and joined the global School Meals Coalition.
